If you’ve ever visited an emergency department, had surgery, or been hospitalized, you’ve probably received intravenous (IV) therapy. Today, IV hydration has also become increasingly available in outpatient clinics and through mobile wellness providers, leading many people to wonder: What exactly is IV therapy, and how can it help me?
The answer depends on WHY you’re receiving it.
As healthcare providers, our goal is to recommend IV therapy when it is medically appropriate, not as a cure-all, but as an effective tool for restoring hydration, correcting nutrient deficiencies, and helping the body recover under specific circumstances.
What Is IV Therapy?
Intravenous (IV) therapy is the administration of sterile fluids, electrolytes, vitamins, medications, or other treatments directly into a vein.
Unlike fluids or supplements taken by mouth, IV therapy bypasses the digestive system and delivers fluids directly into the bloodstream. This allows healthcare providers to rapidly replace fluid volume, administer medications, or deliver nutrients when oral intake is difficult or inadequate.
Hospitals and doctors have relied on IV therapy for decades because it provides a safe, controlled, and efficient method of treatment when administered by trained medical professionals.
IV vitamin therapy should be individualized rather than viewed as a one-size-fits-all treatment. It is important that a doctor reviews each person’s health status and prescribes the appropriate therapy for their health and wellness goals.
When Is IV Therapy Helpful?
IV therapy is not intended to replace healthy habits like drinking water, eating a balanced diet, exercising, and getting adequate sleep. Instead, it can provide meaningful support in situations where the body’s needs temporarily exceed what can be achieved through oral hydration alone.
1. Dehydration
The most common reason for IV therapy is dehydration. Common causes of dehydration include:
- Inadequate fluid intake (for varied reasons)
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Heat exposure
- Intense exercise
- Fever
- Excessive alcohol consumption
Even mild dehydration can contribute to fatigue, headaches, dizziness, reduced exercise performance, and poor concentration.
IV fluids rapidly restore circulating fluid volume and electrolyte balance, allowing many people to begin feeling better as hydration is corrected.
2. Electrolyte Replacement
Water alone is only part of hydration. Electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride, help regulate:
- Muscle contraction
- Nerve signaling
- Blood pressure
- Heart rhythm
- Fluid balance
Heavy sweating, gastrointestinal illness, prolonged endurance exercise, or certain medications can deplete these important substances.

4. Healthy Aging Support
As interest in healthy aging has grown, certain IV therapies and nutritional supplements have gained attention for their potential to support cellular health. While no IV treatment can stop or reverse the aging process, some ingredients commonly included in wellness protocols are being actively studied for their role in maintaining normal cellular function and promoting healthy aging. Most notably, these are:
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell of the body. It plays a critical role in converting nutrients into energy, repairing DNA, regulating metabolism, and supporting the function of mitochondria, the structures responsible for producing cellular energy. NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, and researchers are investigating whether restoring these levels may help support healthy aging and improve metabolic resilience.
Because NAD+ itself is not well absorbed when taken orally, many longevity-focused protocols utilize intravenous NAD+ infusions or oral NAD+ precursors such as nicotinamide riboside (Niagen®). Early clinical studies suggest these compounds can increase NAD+ levels in humans and may positively influence markers of cellular health.
Glutathione. Glutathione is often referred to as the body’s “master antioxidant” because it helps protect cells from oxidative stress, or the accumulation of unstable molecules that can damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes over time. Oxidative stress is believed to contribute to many age-related diseases and the normal aging process itself.
In addition to its antioxidant activity, glutathione supports immune function, assists the liver in detoxification, and helps regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. Some studies suggest that maintaining healthy glutathione levels may support overall cellular health, particularly in individuals experiencing increased oxidative stress.
5. Recovery After Illness
People recovering from stomach viruses, food poisoning, influenza, or other illnesses often struggle to drink enough fluids due to nausea or poor appetite.
When oral hydration becomes difficult, IV fluids can provide hydration while the body recovers. In medical settings, IV hydration has long been a cornerstone of treatment for symptoms related to gastrointestinal illness.
6. Athletic Recovery
Intense physical activity increases fluid losses through sweat while also depleting electrolytes.
Athletes participating in endurance events or prolonged outdoor activity may benefit from rapid rehydration after significant fluid loss. This is an excellent supplement to maintaining adequate oral intake of water and electrolytes.
7. Hangover Symptom Prevention and Relief
Alcohol contributes to dehydration by increasing urine production while also disrupting normal electrolyte balance.
Many of the symptoms associated with hangovers including thirst, headache, dizziness, and fatigue, are related, at least in part, to dehydration.
IV fluids may improve hydration status more quickly than drinking fluids when nausea makes oral hydration difficult. Additions such as anti-nausea and pain relief medications help speed recovery from alcohol consumption. However, IV therapy does not accelerate alcohol metabolism.
Is IV Therapy Safe?
When performed by qualified healthcare professionals using sterile technique and appropriate patient screening, IV therapy is generally very safe.
Before treatment, a medical provider will carefully review health history, current symptoms, and a person’s goals and concerns before outlining an IV therapy plan.
Although uncommon, potential risks include:
- Bruising
- Minor discomfort at the IV site
- Infection
- Infiltration (fluid leaking outside the vein)
- Allergic reactions
- Fluid overload in susceptible individuals
Is IV Therapy Right for Everyone?
Not necessarily. Certain medical conditions or patient circumstances are not best served by IV hydration and vitamin therapy.
The best IV therapy begins with an individualized assessment rather than a predetermined “one-size-fits-all” treatment.
